We’re excited for the next step in our campaign to get bottle deposits, building on our petition with a new initiative. We haven’t launched it officially yet but wanted to start getting the word out now.

We’re teaming up with community recycling champions the Zero Waste Network, marae-style zero waste warriors Para Kore and ocean heroes Our Seas Our Future to have a stronger voice together. We’re partnering to promote an open letter urging the government to introduce bottle deposits now.  A bunch of other fantastic organisations, including Greenpeace and Engineers for Social Responsibility are jumping on as initial signatories. And you can be part of it, too!

The open letter is a way for organisations, businesses and community groups to show their support for bottle deposits – for clean oceans and healthy communities. The more future thinking organisations sign it, the more motivation Eugenie Sage – who holds the waste portfolio – will have to speed up our move to a zero-waste society. Will you get your group to sign the letter? Read it here.

We think an initiative like this is worthy of celebration so we’re inviting supporters to an Auckland launch event for the letter, 6pm May 15 (put it in your diary). We’ll have great speakers, a chance to ask questions, and kai and drinks to share while mingling with zero waste experts, enthusiasts and other like minded folk. Check out the Facebook event page and share it with your friends.

Aotearoa has long considered itself a leader in caring for the environment and in social innovations – but if we’re not quick, we’ll be left behind as more and more countries introduce bottle deposits. So will you get your organisation, business or community group to sign our open letter? Signing will send a message that we want bottle deposits, because we care about plastic free waterways, a zero waste future, creating green, entry level jobs for kiwis… and so much more!

It’s easy to get a group signed up. Just email holly@kiwibottledrive.nz to express your interest and which organisation you represent and we can work together from there.

This work is a collective effort, and its been amazing to see more and more people getting involved, signing the petition, come to our events and sharing the big job of cleaning up this planet! On behalf of our oceans thank you for being part of the campaign for a zero-waste future.
